Denver LMAG Executive Committee Mtg
Denver LMAG Executive Committee Mtg
ExCom planning meeting to install new officers and plan events for the coming year. Agenda: 1. Install our two new officers. I believe that our existing Ex-Comm (Owen, Ian, and Jim S.) are authorized to do this. 2. Approve expenditures for the registration fee for the LMAG conference in April. That would require that any of the officers who wished to attend would have reached a decision regarding whether they wanted to go or not. I believe that Vijay and Jim J. are the only candidates at this point. 3. Authorized an expenditure and decide on a gift/award for former LMAG Secretary Jim Fuller. 4. Generate some ideas and follow-up assignments for planning LMAG events. These might include: a. the ‘dine and learn’ luncheon events that we did quarterly in pre-COVID times, b. taking an active role in providing volunteers to the ‘Build Something Cool’ event. c. facilitating some ‘best practice’ meetings with the student chapters. We have successfully done this in the past. We would need to coordinate with Colleges and Universities Chair Neill Kefauver. d. soliciting volunteers for upcoming conferences in Denver. e. identifying a qualified milestone program and a member that might have been involved with that program. f. identify a suitable member of the Denver LMAG to be interviewed for the IEEE oral history program. g. and any other ideas that occur to us Bldg: Golden Hotel, 800 Eleventh Street, Golden, Colorado, United States, 80401

IEEE CIR & CIS: Digital Signal Processors in Satellite Communications
IEEE CIR & CIS: Digital Signal Processors in Satellite Communications
Presentation: Digital Signal Processors in Satellite Communications Abstract: Modern communications satellites utilize a variety of techniques to implement point-to-point connectivity between terrestrial users and ground-based infrastructure. Among these are digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms that are implemented in several forms, providing flexibility and multi-user capability in lightweight, rugged platforms that can withstand the rigors of spaceflight. Presented are the types of platforms that currently exist, their orbits, their coverage and connectivity characteristics, the algorithms they use to manage user bandwidth effectively, and the hardware they are implemented on. Several examples are shown, along with typical block diagrams and performance characteristics, along with a perspective for future growth. STRATEGIES TO PROTECT IP IN TODAY’S WORLD
STRATEGIES TO PROTECT IP IN TODAY’S WORLD
Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) can protect your ideas, your work, your products, your services, and your company identity. After giving an overview of the classic tools for protecting IP include patents, trade secrets, trademarks and copyrights, we’ll cover some real-world IP risks including outsourcing R&D, open-source software, contributing to and using standards, and joint ownership. Finally, we’ll discuss different strategies for employing the tools to meet your needs while managing the real-world IP risks. Speaker Marc R. Mayer Director of Intellectual Property, Keysight Technologies. IEEE Denver EMC – Effects of Wind Turbine Grounding System Interconnection on Electromagnetic Transients Caused by Lightning
IEEE Denver EMC – Effects of Wind Turbine Grounding System Interconnection on Electromagnetic Transients Caused by Lightning
The latest edition of the norm IEC-61400-24 recommends that the wind turbine’s grounding system should be interconnected to the other wind turbine’s grounding system erected in the wind park; this is in order to reduce abnormal earth potential distribution and mitigate dangerous overvoltage. A comparison between a stand-alone wind turbine (without grounding system interconnection) and a set of interconnected wind turbines (with grounding system interconnection) is presented and analyzed during this lecture. Overvoltage and overcurrent in the form of surges may be the result of electromagnetic traveling waves caused by lightning; these effects may impose additional requirements for the reliable operation of a low voltage and medium voltage grid against surges caused by lightning strikes. Co-sponsored by: Prof. Yarú Méndez; Principle Engineer - LM Windpower in Denmark & EE Lecturer at the Universidad Simón Bolívar (USB) in Venezuela Speaker(s): Prof. Yarú Méndez Agenda: 10:00-10:05AM - Welcome Message, Chapter News, Local Chatter 10:05-11:15AM - Presentation by Prof. Yarú Méndez 11:15-11:30AM - Q&A and Closing Remarks Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/412024

IEEE Denver PES/IAS Chapter March 2024 Meeting
IEEE Denver PES/IAS Chapter March 2024 Meeting
Schedule 6:00 – Check-in, Chapter Business and Networking 6:30 – Dinner Served 7:00 – Presentation 8:00 – Adjourn Summary: Title: Sensitivity analysis of harmonic levels at POI using mixed GSU transformer phase shift, a case study. Description: Join the IEEE PES/IAS Denver chapter during our March technical meeting. Our guest speaker this month is Gerardo Valdés Bustamante from Electric Power Engineers. The integration of renewable energy sources into power systems has led to increased concerns regarding the impact of harmonics on the stability and reliability of the grid. This study investigates the sensitivity of harmonic levels at the Point of Interconnection (POI) in a power system, focusing on the application of mixed Generator Step-Up (GSU) transformer phase shift configurations. The objective is to analyze how varying the vector group in the GSU transformers affects harmonic distortion at the POI. The case study was based on a realistic power system model with renewable energy sources and mixed GSU transformers. A comprehensive sensitivity analysis was conducted by changing the vector group of the GSU transformers and monitoring the resulting harmonic levels at the POI. The study identified the optimal vector group configurations that minimize harmonic distortion while ensuring efficient power transfer.
